- Sims are much more lifelike. They way they move, facial expressions, interactions, everything. Sims actually have fingers now! Their personalities also seem to show through their movements.
- You can zoom in very close & watch things as if level with your sims, or you can pan up and watch things from above. The abilities to zoom, move the screen around, etc. is different than in the Sims 1 and will take some getting used to. No more scrolling your mouse to the edge of the screen to move the view. Now you have to hold down one of the mouse buttons and scroll.
- One person tried to have their sim "throw a party." Since the family had no friends yet the prompt said "You don't have any friends to invite, loser." (yes, they did say "loser"!) It looks like they're trying to interject a lot of humor in the game.
- You can hire a nanny to come over & take care of the kids. You can hire a bartender to come to your house.
- Create-a-sim feature was very cool. You have almost total customization over the face. You can change features like the sharpness or weakness of the chin, the shape of the lips, the look of the eyes, the fullness/thinness of the face, etc. You can add facial hair, change the eyebrows, add makeup (currently only lipstick and eye shadow), hair color, hair styles. You can make your sims skinny or fat. Although, we suggested that you be allowed to customize a sims porportions (i.e. a sim with a big butt, small breasts, etc.). We also suggested they include the ability to add things like moles, tattoos, scars (or maybe get those from life events), piercings, etc. You could zoom in really close in the Create-a-Sim screen to see details, or zoom out for a bigger picture. You can customize outfits by picking separate pieces. It looks like they also plan to add jewelry. And you can also put glasses on your sims. Maybe they just hadn't included it yet (but we did suggest it), but it didn't appear you could change the color of your Sims eyes. I'm hoping they add that. Also, I think they said there would be like 32 different "ethnicities" to choose from.
- Build mode was cool. You can make foundations so you can have decks, or raised homes. The roof is totally customizable. No more cookie cutter roof. You can have shingles on only one portion if you want it. You can make part of the roof with a high pitch, and another part with a different pitch. Fireplaces have chimneys, and no longer have to go on the wall. Doors/window could be placed diagonally. I think you could also change the appearance of many of the doors and windows. So you could select a door style and then change the color of it, for instance.
- In the buy mode, you could select an object and then customize it. i.e. you could pick out a couch and then pick out the color of the frame and then the upholstery. It looks like (at least at this point) there is a limited array of choices though. You can't put furniture diagonally (which was a disappointment). They had career objects you could buy for home use like a surgery table, and polygraph, and teleprompter. Objects were categorized similarly to how they are in Sims 1.
-Menus were a little more confusing. There was a lot more information and buttons on there. I think it's something you'll adapt to once you start playing. A tutorial would definitely be good for that. They generally tried to set things up in a similar manner to the Sims 1.
He/She then went on to answer some questions. I've pasted the answers here:
There are swimming pools. I didn't play in one, but I did build one. I think they hadn't completed the water yet, because it looked plaid. I highly doubt it will be that way in the game. Unless, that's just how it looked b/c I was in build mode. We were trying to see if there were pool toys, but we didn't see any (doesn't mean they weren't there though).
I don't think there are any community lots, except for one downtown area where you can buy food and clothes. Although, we suggested they have a Rec Center in that lot so sims could have weddings/parties/funerals/etc. there.
Some of the objects included things for careers. There was a teleprompter, a surgery table, a polygraph. There were a lot of the old standard items too. I really didn't have much of a chance to look at a lot of the objects.
Tons of new social interactions. I only saw a handful of them. You could tell dirty jokes. You could read while lying on a bed. You could grab a snack while you were watching TV. You could choose whether to console/congratulate a sim if they were having a memorable life event. You could have a "family" style kiss.
One of the scenarios we were playing, we had to try to get a sim pregnant. Actually, the couple were newlyweds, and when you clicked on their house, in the neighborhood screen, it told you that they were just married. I don't think anyone was successful in getting them to "mate," but I did see in some screen shots elsewhere that the woman tears of her shirt and then leaps on the guy when they have sex.
They didn't mention anything about the lifespans, but I do know you are supposed to be able to toggle that on or off. So, if you don't want your sims to die, they don't have to.
I didn't try calling the nanny. But, she was under the services menu on the phone. I'm assuming she works like the butler (which, if I remember right, was also in there). She comes over and watches over your kids. I know they are also supposed to be able to hire a babysitter. I'm not sure if that's the same as the nanny, or if you can call a neighbor and ask them to babysit for you.
One funny bug was when the grandfather was trying to change a toddlers diaper. He stripped off all of his clothes and was changing the baby naked!
They look like they have a lot of the game done, but there are definietly things that still need to be added. Even the CaSIE wasn't completed yet. And during the group they were asking us what we liked/didn't like and what we'd like to see them add. So, they may still put in some of our suggestions. There were buttons that weren't functional yet, or where things didn't show up the way they were supposed to. So, they do have to clean up the game quite a bit before they release it.
I just remembered, I saw a potty training toilet in the game, for toddlers. So, you do have to potty train them. Otherwise, you'll have to change their diapers, and the dirty diaper looks all gross. There was a cradle you could buy for the babies, as opposed to a bed.
I think we were just having a hard time figuring out what the required actions were to get the newly weds to mate. One person tried making them both lie on the bed. I tried having the wife give the husband a back rub (and she walked up to him and twirled her index finger, motioning him to turn around).
I didn't see the Goth's and the Newbies, but I've heard they are going to be in the game.
There was a wide variety of clothing options in the game, and you get to mix and match. So, you could pick sort of a country/western styled button up shirt and mix it with blue jeans, or a mini skirt, etc. There was also a hula skirt and coconut bra. There were tank tops, t-shirts, skirts with tights, and a lot more. Some stuff was more plain, some stuff was more themed. But there was a variety, and you could make a sim look as wacky, or normal as you wanted.
You could (obviously) sleep and rest on the bed. One of the kids was actually jumping on the bed. you can watch TV on the bed, or read while laying on the bed.
I didn't change their clothes in the game, so I don't know how they do it.
I knnow there is weather, but we didn't see any. All of the scenarios we played, it was sunny. But I heard you also get sunrise and sunset with the different light that produces. And you get rain, lightening, etc.
I know there was a "family kiss." But, one weird thing I noticed (which was maybe a bug?) was that there was an option for a mother sim to "flirt" with the grandfather. I thought that was pretty icky. Maybe it's her father in law though? But even then, that's still weird.
I think things are definietly slower. Since you have to go through different stages of life, you experience different things in each of those stages. And you don't go from child to teenager in like 2 days. I don't know what the time span is, but I'm assuming you get to play the life stages for a decent amount of time before moving on to the next.
Oh, another cool thing about CaSIE that I noticed. When you change some of the features, like the nose or lips, the part pulsates and throbs before settling in to the new size/shape. It was just sort of neat.
It was a little confusing at first trying to figure out exactly what to do with the foundations. You couldn't put them up against an already built wall. Which, I guess makes sense. But there were little stairs to attach to the foundation so you could have a deck or porch. And you could build houses on top of the foundations
You know, I just remembered, instead of just having your sims walk, you could make them skip instead!
Plus, when you're loading up a house, it shows a loading screen with the faces of all of the family members and it flashes their names on the screen.
And when you're in CaSIE, if you make a family, you can assign relationships in there. We didn't get to do that, but the guy was telling us that you have to assign relationships if you have multiple people in the family. That way you can make an old man married to a younger woman, and make kids for them, but not have the game think the old man is grandpa just because he's old.
And mized in with the facial hair, they had some "stubble" beards. I thought that was cool, since sometimes you may want your sim to have a 5 o'clock shadow, and not a full out beard or goatee.
For the hair, there was a button for "custom." I'm assuming that's an option where you can either make customized hair styles/colors outside of the game, or maybe even in the game itself.
And in one of the scenarios the mom was dancing to music on a boombox. It was funny to watch her dance, because it almost looked like she was trying to be cool, but instead she was being kind of stiff. But, I know (based on other videos of the game I've seen) that the Sims don't dance in one way anymore. Now their dancing style can vary.
